MACIEJ URBANOWICZ. FOUNDER, MURB SPACE

MURB Space was founded in Warsaw by experienced space industry expert Maciej Urbanowicz in 2016, building on his many years’ experience in a variety of engineering and project management roles.

In 2011 Maciej was awarded third prize in a prestigious international competition for student projects organised by the International Academy of Astronautics at the 8th IAA Symposium on Small Satellites for Earth Observation.

He also took part in the Space Studies Program at the International Space University and worked as project coordinator and leading mechanical engineer on the PW-Sat satellite project, which launched in 2012.

Following these achievements Maciej worked on a variety of space projects around the world, leading up to the official launch of MURB Space in 2016.

The company now serves clients both in Poland and internationally alongside a strong and established partner network based in Europe, North America and Asia.

Presentation Synopsis:

‘3D MGSE – more efficient mass production of small satellites by implementing the process optimization approach’

In the world of upcoming mega constellations of small satellites, we should care both about the efficiency and the quality. One of the key elements that should be implemented is the process-oriented approach, i.e. something widely used in other industries such as automotive, where the delivery time matters, and any delay is very expensive. Also, for many companies where the high-volume production means dozens of devices manufactured each year these processes might be simply overwhelming.

To reduce the development time, we need to find the way to improve the development process. First of all, the company has to implement the process approach - at least partially, where the repeated steps are well defined and can be improved. One of the repeated activities that consumes time and resources is the rotation of the satellite during the assembly process.

Any manual activity with the satellite has to be done with care. But it consumes time and resources due to required repeated activities, like reporting and safety procedures included in the original process. The implementation of the appropriate tool may help to reduce steps as well as the effort and required resources needed to achieve the goal.

Process optimization is the key driver in achieving cost reduction and improvement of resource utilization. MURB Space offers the 3D MGSE which allows to fulfill safety and quality requirements and save resources, such as time and money, by reducing the number of manual activities.

3D MGSE is a device created to both facilitate and shorten the assembly process, while satisfying the quality requirements. It allows the engineers to mount and rotate the satellite. Thus, it shortens the procedure of manipulating the satellite when the engineer performs manual activities, such as mounting the components inside the satellite and performing tests.
